Emily Dickinson (1830-1886)
The daughter of a lawyer, Emily (Elizabeth) Dickinson was born in Amherst Massachusetts. She died, unmarried, a recluse. She attended Mount Holyoke Female Seminary in South Hadley, after which she formed close relationships with several men who encouraged her to pick up the pen.

Sadly, however, Emily only published seven of nearly 2,000 poems during her life. The rest was published in the 1890's following her suicide.
